Facts about Chaco Canyon
Pueblo tribes, occupied a large area of the southwest United States for about 2,000 years. Chaco Canyon was a key center of ancestral Pueblo culture, serving as a center for ceremonials, trade, and political activities for the prehistoric Four Corners region.
Chaco is known for its gigantic public and ceremonial buildings, as well as its unique architecture — it contains an old urban ceremonial center unlike anything else built before or subsequently.
The UNESCO World Heritage property also contains the Aztec Ruins National Monument and many smaller Chaco sites controlled by the Bureau of Land Management, in addition to the Chaco Culture National Historical Park.

Chaco Culture National Historical Park
Chaco Culture National Historical Park is a collection of Native American ruins located in northwestern New Mexico, United States. It’s about 45 miles (70 kilometres) south of Bloomfield and 55 miles (90 kilometres) northeast of Gallup.
Chaco Canyon National Monument was established in 1907 and was redesignated and renamed in 1980; it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
The park covers 53 square miles (137 square kilometres) and is carved out of a gorge by the Chaco and Gallo washes. The name comes from the Spanish word chaca, which could be a translation of a Navajo word meaning canyon.
From 850 to 1250 AD, the site served as an administrative, economic, and ceremonial center for the Ancestral Pueblo (Anasazi) people. The predecessors of the contemporary Pueblo Indians were the Ancestral Pueblos.

The buildings are joined by a series of straight, wide streets that spread outward like spokes on a wheel, and are noted for their exquisite architecture. They were originally linked to dozens of other villages in the area by 400 miles (650 kilometres) of engineered roadways.
Mesoamerican turquoise jewelry, obsidian blades, and macaw feathers indicate that Chaco was located along a major trading route that stretched far south.
There are 13 large ruins and around 400 lesser archaeological sites in the park. The largest and most thoroughly excavated site, Pueblo Bonito (constructed primarily in the 10th century), had over 800 rooms and 39 kivas (round, subterranean ceremonial chambers).
The residents were skilled in pottery, jewellery, construction, and masonry, according to the excavations. The visitor center has artifacts on display. Five major locations with self-guided hiking routes are accessible through a 9-mile (15-kilometer) paved road; backcountry hiking trails are also available.
Coyotes, bobcats, jackrabbits, prairie dogs, kangaroo rats, antelope ground squirrels, and lizards thrive in the park’s desert climate. Aztec Ruins National Monument (north) and Mesa Verde National Park (south) are culturally connected to the park (northwest).
The Navajo Indian Reservation, which spans Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah, lies immediately west of the site, and Canyon de Chelly. El Malpais, and El Morro are among the adjacent national monuments.
