St. Catherine’s Egypt Monastery at Mount Sinai

St Catherine Monastery by Jim Forest

St. Catherine Egypt Monastery was built in the sixth century, making it the oldest Christian monastery that is still used for its original purpose. Its walls and buildings are very important for learning about Byzantine architecture, and the monastery has some of the best collections of early Christian manuscripts and icons. The monastery looks great against the rough, mountainous landscape, which has many religious and archaeological sites and monuments. Image by Jim Forest is licensed under CC BY-NC-ND 2.0.
