The Itamaraty Palace is the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil. It is located in the national capital of Brasilia. Its Portuguese name is Palacio Itamaraty. It is also known as the Palace of the Arches, i.e., Palacio dos Arcos. The architect Oscar Niemeyer was responsible for the building’s design, and it first opened its doors on April 21, 1970. It is located to the east of the building that houses the National Congress and runs along the Ministries Esplanade. It is close to the Praca dos Tres Poderes, also known as the Three Powers Plaza. In Brazil, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is frequently referred to as the Itamaraty, which is a metonym for the Ministry. The name derives from the palace in Rio de Janeiro that formerly served as the ministry’s headquarters before the capital of Brazil and the government moved to Brasilia.
